Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda H.E. Kiema Kilonzo has officially become acknowledged as the leading candidate in the 2022 Kitui County Gubernatorial Race. This comes even before Kiema confirms his interest in the seat due to the urgency of the matter as Kitui Residents are frustrated by the scandals and failures of Governor Ngilu and her administration and cannot wait to replace her with new blood. It is also an expression of the confidence Kitui Residents have in their son, Kiema Kilonzo, both as a leader who has come of age and as the future of Kitui County, and maybe Ukambani, political leadership.
Many observers of Kitui County politics are quick to admit that the residents are tired of “business as usual” politics and the fact that there is nothing to show for Kitui County Government nine (9) years since it was inaugurated on 4th March 2013. Kitui Residents in the quest to find the best replacement for Governor Ngilu and someone who can correct the errors that have kept Kitui County grounded for the last decade as well as steer the county to prosperity in the next decade are said to have settled on H.E. Kiema Kilonzo as the right man for the job.
Since 2013, Kitui County has received more than Ksh. 80 Billion from the National Government but there is no development or any anchor project to show for all that money. Kitui County Government has not build a single hospital or road or infrastructure which can be said to have swallowed this money. Many Kitui Residents are beginning to wonder where their money goes as even after replacing Governor Malombe with Governor Ngilu, nothing has changed for better and there are no development projects on the ground to justify the billions that received by Kitui County Government so far.
As a result, many Kitui Residents are tired of Governor Ngilu and the many scandal that have become the hallmark of her Adminstration. They want nothing to do with former Governor Malombe as they see him as part and parcel of what ails Kitui County and cannot point anything he did in his five(5) years as Governor. Kiema Kilonzo is seen as “the tried and tested safe pair of hands which can be trusted to turn around Kitui County” for the benefit of the Residents. His long experience in Kitui politics and national leadership having served as Mutitu MP for 2 uninterrupted terms from 2002 to 2013 is a big plus.
Beyond Kitui Gubernatorial politics, many Kitui Residents consider Kiema Kilonzo as a key player at the national level and the ideal successor of Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as Kamba Leader, and to them his return to active politics is highly welcome. As Political commentator Paul Musyimi recently noted on social forums: “Given Kalonzo’s age, Kitui County Residents need to know that in voting Kiema Kilonzo in 2022, they shall not only be choosing their Governor for the next 5 years but also the man who is likely to guarantee that the County is represented at the National Level in the near future.”

One year to the next election, Kiema Kilonzo not only enjoys the front-runner advantage but also lacks the burden of incumbency and is not worn down by grudges of unfulfilled promises that come with being in office as does Governor Ngilu and to a large extent Governor Malombe. Kiema’s extensive experience both in Parliament and in Diaspora, as Ambassador to Turkey and Uganda, is seen by many as the right skills mix necessary for transformational and responsive leadership that can turnaround Kitui County into a development powerhouse beyond 2022.
With the Kitui Governor race increasingly becoming a Kiema versus Ngilu two-horse race, majority of Kitui Residents appear to have accepted the amiable Diplomat as their next Governor. Former Governor Malombe is being dismissed as “a five-year old vomit that people cannot swallow back.” The Former Kitui Senator David Musila has been unanimously sidelined as “too old for active politics” and “part of the old leadership that has failed Kitui County.” Former Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mweke attempt to enter the race has run into headwinds “due to his inability to learn basic Kikamba to even beg for water” and “the fact that he did not hire even a cleaner from Kitui in the five years he was at the helm of Nairobi County.”
A recent poll in Kitui County revealed that Kiema Kilonzo is the man tipped to win the Kitui Governor by over 60% landslide if the race was held today. Kiema holds a a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science and a Masters of Arts (MA) in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies. Born in 1966 in Kitui County, Kiema Kilonzo has extensive background in diplomacy, fraud investigations and forensics, experience that will come very hardy as the next Governor of Kitui will need to take active steps to recover what the last two Governors have stolen from Kitui County Residents in the last decade.
