Senior Lawyer Joel Kyatha Mbaluka has pledged to lobby for upgrading of Machakos Town into Machakos City including modernizing its infrastructure if elected Governor in 2022 adding that there is no reason Eldoret and Nakuru are Cities yet Machakos is still considered a mere town in allocation of infrastructure resources. Giving the example of recent Kisumu City infrastructure investments by National Government, Lawyer Mbaluka argues that the upgrade of Machakos into a City will not only quicken its growth and increase the value of residents investments in it, it will also make it distinctive and attractive to sell as an investment destination.
“Machakos County is entitled to reap the benefits of its proximity to Nairobi by having its residents not only enjoy services and amenities at par with what one can have in Nairobi City but also to have their investments in Machakos enjoy commensurate value with those they have made in Nairobi. We need to bid for Machakos Town to become Machakos City, rather than dream of creating a future City, so that all the growth in outskirts of Nairobi that surround Machakos can find its epicenter in that Machakos City instead of Nairobi and to bring more business to establishments in Machakos,” said Lawyer Mbaluka.
Hon Mbaluka believes the quest for realization of Machakos City should have been the logical step after coming up with the “Machakos is the place to be” slogan. He decried the fact that the current county administration had not made any serious efforts to attract investments that can draw people from Nairobi to Machakos like five (5) star hotels and resorts and conference centres. He pointed at Naivasha which has become the destination of Government meetings saying if there were more Maanzoni Resorts more people would be visiting Machakos.
According to Mbaluka, the upgrade of Machakos Town into Machakos City by 2025 is the logical step of the completion of the Dual Highway, Nairobi Expressway and Konza Technocity as it will make living in Machakos and working in Nairobi more logical and easier. The upgrade of Machakos into a City, Lawyer Mbaluka opines, would compel the county and by extension the National Government to focus on upgrading infrastructure around and across Machakos to world-class.
“It is not fair for a child in Masii or Masinga to be schooling in a classroom without windows or cement floor while a child a few kilometres away in Nairobi is enjoying a modern classroom and cemented floor. Beyond upgrading Machakos town infrastructure into that of a City, the County must take steps to ensure that Machakos Residents enjoy the benefits of being truly within Nairobi Metropolis. As it is now, we are the Nairobi neighboring County with the poorest infrastructure,” added Lawyer Mbaluka.
In addition, Lawyer Mbaluka has pledged to pursue policies that modernize markets across Machakos even as he eliminates market levies. He has also undertaken to lower cost of business permit saying it has become one reason people are afraid of joining business. Mbaluka is also planning to make sure 60% of County tenders go to businesses based in Machakos and owned by the County Residents saying if more than 5 Billion is injected into businesses and economy every year, the difference would be noticeable.
“It is not fair for lawyers, consultants, suppliers and contractors who are based in Nairobi City and are not even owned by sons and daughters of Machakos County to come grab all the county works and projects and leave bare bones for Machakos based businesses which are paying licenses and employing Machakos people. We must invest in our own even if it means passing a Machakos County law to see to it county tenders and works are given to Machakos Businesses and people who can hire our youth,” explained Mbaluka.
