Kitui South MP Hon Dr. Rachael Kaki Nyamai is truly the Iron Lady of Eastern Kenya: She has defied all the odd and withered every storm since she ventured into politics in 2013 and looks like she is just getting started and not ready to take any prisoners in 2022. With both Governor Ngilu and Kalonzo jostling for the attention of President Uhuru Kenyatta whom Hon Rachel Nyamai supported as they opposed him in 2017, she finds herself in the enviable position playing the host as the two court Jubilee. It will be interesting to see how the candidates of Ngilu’s NARC and Kalonzo’s Wiper will fair against Hon Rachael Nyamai in 2022 if they end up in same camp when she has been beating them while at loggerheads with their leaders.
For instance, in 2013, Hon Rachel Kaki ruined the party for Wiper by emerging the only Non-Wiper MP elected in the entire Kitui County on NARC Party ticket. In fact, even the NARC Party Leader Charity Ngilu lost her senatorial bid to Wiper as did the NARC Party Gubernatorial and Women Representative Candidates. But Hon Rachel Kaki Nyamai, despite being a newcomer, defied the Wiper/CORD wave and stormed to office with more than 50% of the votes cast in Kitui South and put a gap of 5,226 votes between her and the nearest rival (a Wiper Candidate) who went on to retire from politics rather than face her wrath again.
In 2017, even as NASA scooped 80% of the presidential votes in Kitui South and Kitui County, Hon Rachel Kaki again switched parties to Jubilee but still went on to beat a new Wiper Candidate in his party’s stronghold with another huge margin and even got 24% more votes than in 2013. At the same time, Hon Nyamai increased the gap between her and the nearest rival (again a Wiper Candidate) by 25% to 6,536 Votes. As the de facto Jubilee lynchpin in Kitui County, she also managed to win Jubilee Party an extra MP seat in Kitui East and the highest percentage of Jubilee Presidential votes in the entire Ukambani.
The question remain: What is special with Hon Racheal Kaki Nyamai that compels Kitui South People to defy political wave after wave to vote for her even when she goes against the grain?. The answer appears to be: Hon Rachel Kaki Nyamai knows what her Kitui South people need and is committed to go to the end of the earth to get it for them. For instance, it is her efforts in lobbying for the construction of the Kibwezi-Mutomo-Kitui road to open up Kitui South that saw Jubilee Government allocate money to the project. Similarly, as Chair of the National Health Committee, she pushed for construction and equipping of Ikutha Hospital among other health facilities in Kitui South to the admiration of many.
In this second term, Hon Rachael Kaki Nyamai’s track record of development is considered second to none in Kitui County and marked by prudent utilization of Kitui South NG-CDF and constant engagement of the residents to promote active public participation in the selection of urgent projects for implementation every financial year. She has also utilized her position as Chairperson of National Lands Committee to ramp up the titling of land in Kitui County and Kitui South in particular. She also remains one of the most active MPs in Kenya having sponsored half dozen bills and spoken on the floor of Parliament a record 1,310 times.
Hon Rachel Kaki Nyamai is in luck again as she is she gears to face another bunch of political novices with most of her 2017 opponents opting to cut their losses rather than face her for a beating. One has to wait to see how the new kids in the block will go about reversing the gains she has already made to catch up with her in the next 11 months in the run up to the next election. Wiper and NARC seem unable to find any serious candidates willing to take the risk of running against Hon Rachael Nyamai in her bid for third term. The new UDA Party too does not seem to agree on who will bite the bullet and run against her. No question, time is running out for anyone hoping to stand any chance against her in 2022.
As opined by one Kitui-based Political Analyst: “There is only one candidate to beat in Kitui South in 2022 and that is Dr. Rachael Kaki Nyamai. Her political future looks brighter than the noon sun. I venture her superior education, broad experience, impressive track record and solid support base will again sweep her to office for the third term barring a political earthquake. The fate of her opponents appear sealed by their crowded numbers (which will divide their votes) and the fact that Hon Rachel Kaki Nyamai was born and bred in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward and married in Mutomo/Kibwea ward. The two are the top and second most populous wards in Kitui South respectively and are known to reinforce her numbers.” Clearly, Hon Rachael Kaki Nyamai is the candidate to watch in Kitui South in 2022.
