The story of Eng. Dennis Mwangangi is a confirmation of the limits of impossibility, a testament of the potential of possibility, a proof that anything can happen for those who are determined to make it in life and evidence that one can beat the odds and rise from the bottom to the top if willing to work hard and never give up. For a man who came from the bottom, it is clear to all Kitui South Residents that he is in the race to be their next MP in 2022 to use the office in helping to better others.
For Eng. Dennis Mwangangi, bottom up economics is not just a political slogan, it is the reality of his life. He credits education for affording him the opportunity to rise from the bottom up and believes it is time to offer the leadership Kitui South needs for many others who find themselves at the bottom to break out and rise up from poverty. It is no surprise that the economic philosophy of the Deputy President William Ruto has resonated with him and he is leaning on the UDA Party side, that is where he belongs.
The slogan of UDA that all work is work, that is “Kazi ni kazi” is straight from the mindset of Eng. Dennis Mwangangi. Indeed, if Deputy President William Ruto sold chicken to pay his school fees, Eng. Dennis Mwangangi made, cured and sold clay bricks to raise his university school fees. The wheelbarrow, the symbol of UDA Party, is one tool Eng. Mwangangi is very familiar with having used it on numerous occasions to transport bricks and eke his living both in High School and while in the University.
“In August 1998 as I waited to join university, I took to making clay bricks to sell to raise my university fees. I’m happy there is a God in heaven who raises the poor from dust and sits them with Princes in high places,” Eng. Mwangangi recently reminisced in a Facebook post adding that many of his friends who know him now maybe would not have recognized him had they met him earlier before he became a household name in Kitui South.
The good news is all these challenges did not stop Eng. Dennis Mwangangi from exceling in secondary school, getting admitted to the university and go on to graduate with honours as an Engineer because he is a man who believes in persistence and doing whatever it takes to achieve what he sets out to do. Today, he is one of the handful of registered civil engineers in the entire Kitui County. Now he has returned to give back to Kitui South Residents by offering good leadership which he believes can change lives.
Eng. Mwangangi is quick to explain that he is vying for Kitui MP to build better classes for children of Kitui South to study than he had. He is in the race to fight to bring drinking water near to the people so it doesn’t take children hours of school time going to fetch it in distant rivers. He wants to provide bursaries equitably so that other children don’t have to make bricks to pay fees like him. He wants to fight for more roads to be constructed in Kitui South rather than having a single road project that takes a decade.
“I actually used to settle for my evening studies around 10PM when I was in class 8 and I would study for around 2 hours before I could retire to bed. This is because after school I had to walk for long distances to either Kathini River or Kaatumia dam in search of water. No other child of Kitui South should have to go through such trouble in this century. We are seeking leadership to change these realities because the current leadership has done nothing about for the last decade,” says Eng. Dennis Mwangangi.
Eng. Dennis Mwangangi has also shown unparalleled commitment in the empowerment of youth in Kitui South by helping many of them take advantage of opportunities to grow themselves. He has been supporting sports and talents in Kitui South and his own sponsored Eng. Dennis Football Tournament is now a major fixture in the Constituency. Recently, Eng. Mwangangi was recognized by one of the major clubs in Kitui South as its main sponsor to the chagrin of the current MP.
As things stand, the Kitui South MP race is increasingly narrowing into a two horse race. The current MP seems to consider Eng. Mwangangi as her only real and main threat especially since he was endorsed by Deputy President William Ruto on behalf of UDA Party as his point man in Kitui South region. Eng. Dennis Maithya Mwangangi continues to make huge political waves and his popularity is rising by the day and many Residents are beginning to see him as truly the future of Kitui South Leadership.
