Hidden indoor spy cams sound like something from Hollywood movies, surprisingly, it’s a common real-world problem.

Couples visiting Airbnb run into these creepy cams only to realize their romantic gateway was being snitched incognito.

With this in mind and without dumping a bundle of paranoia onto your next vacation plans, the Tribune has assembled some quick tips to help you spot any secret cameras on arrival before getting on the fun stuff.

    Here’s what to do.

    1. Check out the local Wi-Fi network

Most houses with hidden cameras have a connected Wi-Fi network. If cameras are not connected to Wi-Fi, your Bluetooth device can pick them up, turn on Bluetooth pairing, and see if any devices are connected. Ignore smart home appliances like smart TVs and focus on the strange devices.

If devices with mysterious names pop up, check them out and see if they identify with cameras or similar products. Keep your Bluetooth on to scan all available devices, enter all the rooms with your phone, and see if another surprise is picked up.

    • Scan for Infrared eye

Many cameras when not on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections, will use infrared/IR for connections and internal controls. That’s the same technology used in old-fashioned TV remotes. Since infrared light is not visible to the naked eye, the front-facing camera on most smartphones lacks an infrared filter.

That means you can use your smartphone to scan the place and watch the footage to review any unexpected whitish dots that could signal a hidden camera device is stacked somewhere.

    • Use camera-spotting application

Few cam-spotting apps are far from perfect, but they can help if you are serious about scanning hidden cams.

They work by detecting any unusual magnetic fields around you. Some apps are automated to detect reflections when scanning the room, while others apply all two options and combine multiple other functions to sense any hidden camera.

Although these apps are typically free or low-priced on download, it’s recommended not to entirely rely on them when your naked eyes can do the job perfectly.

    • Inspect the vents

To effectively uncover any hidden cams, conduct a physical inspection by getting up close to any wall vents, people have uncovered hidden cams in these kinds of places.

Vents can block reflection and hide any infrared light signals unless you are at the correct angle. Initiate an inch-by-inch meticulous scrutiny and carefully focus on common and uncommon places. Inspect electronic devices that are strangely positioned facing privacy areas like bathrooms.

Check any high-up vents, gaps, and hidden holes. Be on the lookout for decorative fixtures and items that could hide a camera, even the tiniest holes could house a pinhole camera

    • Quick pass with a flashlight

Switch off all the lights and do a quick pass with a flashlight. Turn on the flashlight on your smartphone and carry out a calculated sweep across the room. If there are any unexpected flickers of light in strange places that could be one of the sneakiest spy cam lenses.

It may sound weird but it is one of the most effective camera spotting techniques. Save time by focusing on rooms where you suspect hidden cams are likely to be, mostly where you would take your clothes off.

Look for popular spots like plants, lamps, bookshelves, picture frames, and other angles that could offer a wide field view.

Remember, to use your eyes well along with the camera flashlight to achieve maximum results if you are worried about hidden cams and other discreet devices.

    Conclusion

In the age where privacy concerns and technology intersect, familiarizing yourself with the appearance of spy cams could be a significant move towards securing your personal space. These proactive efforts and measures of awareness will not only help you identify illegal surveillance but will also provide a sense of security and peace of mind as you go about your daily routine.
