In an official statement released on Friday, September 27, the Catholic Church has dismissed reports circulating on social media about the death of Cardinal John Njue.
The church confirmed that the 78-year-old cleric is alive and in good health, reassuring worried Catholics after false reports sparked concerns about the Cardinal’s health.
In the statement, the Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop Rt. Rev. Wallace Ng’ang’a urged the public to disregard the baseless claims. “His Eminence John Cardinal Njue is alive, and we ask everyone to disregard the baseless rumors,” he said.
Rev. Nga’ng’a appealed to social media users to refrain from spreading unverified information, especially on matters touching on a person’s health. He assured the public that any updates regarding Cardinal Njue or the church will come directly from official Catholic Church channels.
Father Charles Kinyua, a Nairobi Diocese priest, also took to Facebook to denounce the rumors. “Cardinal is well. Stop the rumors please! I have just talked to him.”
Cardinal Njue is a prominent figure within the Catholic Church, having served as a priest since 1973.
Before his retirement, Njue held several high-ranking positions in the Catholic Church, including Bishop of Embu Diocese, Archbishop of Nyeri Diocese, and later as the Archbishop of Nairobi.
In the past regimes, Njue was an influential voice, and he did not shy away from calling out politicians over corruption and social injustices.
