Amid swirling rumors regarding the health of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speculation has intensified about his potential death or incapacitation.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Khamenei, 85, is either in a coma or seriously ill, leading to discussions of an impending leadership transition in the Islamic Republic of Iran, with suggestions that one of Khamenei’s sons has been secretly selected as his successor.

However, recent developments indicate that while Khamenei’s health is indeed a concern, he remains alive and engaged in official duties.

    Current Health Status

Reports claiming that Ayatollah Khamenei has slipped into a coma have gained traction on social media, especially following a New York Times article stating he was “seriously ill” as of late October.

However, there is no official confirmation on the health status of the Supreme Leader. Khamenei was seen publicly on November 7, when he addressed the Assembly of Experts and met with university students just days earlier on November 21.

Most recently, on November 17, he appeared in a photograph with Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, which was shared on his official social media account. The latest update indicates he is still active in his role as the Supreme Leader.

    Speculation about succession

In light of Khamenei’s declining health, there have been reports suggesting that a successor has been chosen.

A secret meeting of Iran’s Assembly of Experts took place on September 26, where members were allegedly pressured to select Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader’s second son, as the next leader.

Reports suggest that decision was purportedly made to ensure a smooth transition of power while Khamenei is still alive, potentially averting a leadership vacuum that could arise after his death.

Sources indicate that Mojtaba has been groomed for leadership and has taken on increasingly significant roles within the Iranian government. Despite this preparation, there are indications of resistance within the Assembly regarding both the process and the choice of Mojtaba as the successor.

    Political implications

The rumors come amidst escalating regional tensions, with Iran’s involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict drawing international scrutiny.

Khamenei’s outspoken support for Hamas and Hezbollah and his rare public sermon on October 5 further cement his active role in Iran’s politics despite health concerns. His potential succession is expected to face significant public resistance, particularly if Mojtaba assumes the position due to his limited political experience and lack of formal government roles.
