The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has addressed a wild rumor circulating online, which alleged that two thieves had broken into the State House in Mombasa and were found sleeping in President William Ruto’s bed.
The sensational claim gained traction after a fictitious news release suggested that the suspects had entered through an open window, reportedly to experience the comfort of a presidential bed.
In a statement issued on November 17, 2024, the DCI clarified that these reports were entirely false. The agency confirmed that the two individuals, identified as Julius Muthomi, 20, and Pius Kang’ethe Maina, 29, were arrested not at the State House but along Digo Road in Mombasa.
Their arrest occurred on November 11, following a tip-off from concerned citizens who suspected them of handling stolen property. During the operation at their residence in the Rio Building, law enforcement recovered an assortment of items valued at over Ksh1.2 million, including 51 mobile phones and several laptops.

In the statement, DCI confirmed that no items were reported stolen from the State House, and there was no evidence to support claims that the suspects had attempted to invade the president’s private quarters.
Instead, they were apprehended for possession of suspected stolen goods. The agency also noted that the cooks at the State House did not alert security about any unusual activities or sounds coming from the president’s bedroom, as claimed in the fabricated news.
The DCI reiterated the importance of verifying information before sharing it online, to avoid causing panic among members of the public.
