Lupita Amondi Nyong’o was born on March 1, 1983, in Mexico City, Mexico, while her father, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, taught there. Her family had left Kenya in 1980 due to political unrest. Still, they returned to Kenya when she was less than a year old after her father got a professorship at the University of Nairobi. Lupita grew up in Kenya and is the second of six children. She holds dual citizenship in Kenya and Mexico. As a teenager, she was active in local theater productions in Nairobi and made her professional acting debut at fourteen in a production of “Romeo and Juliet” by the Phoenix Players. She completed her education at St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, earning an IB Diploma in 2001. She then went to the United States to study at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she majored in film and theatre studies. While still a student, she worked as a production assistant and intern on several movies, gaining valuable experience in the film industry.
