Nancy Asiya’s educational journey seemed to have ended before it truly began nearly two decades ago.
Now, at 36 and a mother of six, she’s rewriting her story by returning to school as a student at Akoret Girls High School in Tiaty, Baringo County.
How did Nancy Asiya Join School?
In an interview with TV47 at her school, Asiya expressed her optimism as she looked back on her childhood. She recounted how, at 12, she fought to attend primary school despite resistance from her father, who, following Pokot cultural traditions, did not believe in sending her to school.
Nevertheless, her determination prevailed, and although she had to skip grades due to her age, she eventually completed her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2006.
Why Did She Dropped Out of School?
Her high school journey was cut short after she became pregnant and subsequently got married at a young age.
What Influenced Her Return to School?
For years, Asiya never imagined she would have the opportunity to return to the classroom. But with the unwavering support of her husband, who now cares for their children at home, she has resumed her studies. She re-enrolled in January and is currently in Form One, grateful for the second chance to pursue her education.
Asiya’s return to school has been made possible by the efforts of World Vision Kenya, which established the first secondary school in Akoret, Tirioko ward, Tiaty West Sub-County. The new school is part of a broader initiative to improve access to education for vulnerable children in the region, reduce school dropout rates, and combat harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.
What are Asiya’s Future Aspirations?
With renewed hope, Asiya is determined to excel academically, with dreams of attending university and building a successful career. She believes this new path will not only transform her life but also create a brighter future for her family.
